Lesson 4: Swahili Pronunciation and Stress

In Swahili, words are being pronounced as they are on writings. This is a bit different from English language.  Swahili words are not difficult to pronounce at all. If you would like to hear how words are pronounced, please contact me. But, if you are knowledgeable on transcription, you can still learn through the following (don't forget that, you`ve to pronounce them as they are on writings);
      Swahili word      Pronunciation      English
         baba                   /baba/                    father
         vizuri                 /vɪzurɪ/                   good
         wewe                 /wɛwɛ/                    you
         mimi                  /mɪmɪ/                    I/me
         dhahabu             /ðahabu/                 gold
         thamani             /θamanɪ/                  value
         ghali                  /ɣalɪ/                      expensive
         ng`ombe            /ŋɔmbɛ/                  cow
         nyama                /ɲama/                    meat

     e.g.   Juma anaendesha gari
              /ɟuma/ /anaɛndɛʃa/ /garɪ/
              Juma is driving a car

              Mtoto analia
              /mtɔtɔ/ /analɪa/
              A child/baby is crying

NB: Almost all words are pronounced as they are being written, EXCEPT;
       Word          Pronunciation              English
       mbu             /m mbu/                        mosquito
       mbwa          /m mbwa/                      dog
       nzi               /n nzɪ/                            a fly

Swahili Stress
In Swahili, stress is normally placed at last but one syllable (vowel) of a word. So it is
      Swahili                                       English
      habári                                          news
      nzúri                                            good/fine
      líma                                             dig/cultivate
      limía                                            dig by (...)
      karíbu                                          welcome (to 1 or more people)
      karibúni                                       welcome (to 2+ people)

NB: The exception of this rule is on very few words;
        Swahili                                English
        barabára                               road/highway
        barábara                               exactly, quite right, slick,                                                                     accurate,  all right, perfect
